PROJECT PORTFOLIO

The Nature Lab Exhibition

Project

The Nature Lab, Los Angeles Museum of Natural History

Sample Challenge

The Exhibit team wanted to include a hands-on interactive about bird watching. But, during prototyping, good idea after good idea flopped.

My Role

I coordinated the development of key mechanical interactive elements and assisted with production management of this multi-million dollar permanent installation.

Solution

Working closely with an ornithologist and other team members, we kept testing until we developed an activity visitors love. Can you tell a house finch from a hermit thrush? Come to the Nature Lab and learn how.

Failed prototype. Our “peep hole” idea didn’t work unless visitors were aligned perfectly with the viewing window.

Final installation. Binoculars mounted on a fixed pole allowed us to position birds so the features we wished to highlight were easy-to-spot.
